Nature at the heart of design
We were delighted to be recommended for this project, aligning perfectly with the University of Leeds’ strategic vision to create sustainable and enriched environments for students with nature-inspired thinking. Biomimicry and biophilic design principles lie at the heart of the design, with planting being incorporated right from the outset, with the intention of creating a memorable space that draws people in, and provides multiple health and wellbeing benefits.

Aiming high
The library features a vast, arching atrium space comprising of intricately laced timber panels. Working at height required specialist access – something our specialist installation team is used to! The mezzanine level was the perfect place for our trailing replica planting.

Ease of maintenance
To minimise the effort of continual upkeep, high quality replica planting and preserved moss was placed throughout the space. The effect is that nature can be incorporated at multiple levels, unrestricted by light levels or access issues. An imposing moss wall sits at the top of the mezzanine level, reaching right up to the skylights. Elsewhere, textured moss panels adorn walls, and shelving dividers are topped with moss balls.

Different styles of learning
The space includes group study areas, focus pods, and soft seating clusters to provide for different styles of learning. All are embellished with a mix of planting styles, including tabletop planting, planted mobile furniture and bespoke joinery planting. Deep, earthy colours accentuate the natural, sustainable materials, and a subtle blend of textures strengthen the connection to nature.

Championing wellbeing
By focusing on bringing the outside in, the library has been transformed into an inspiring learning space that champions wellbeing. Another win for biophilic design!
