Muse Developments are a commercial developer with regional operations in Manchester, London, Leeds and Glasgow. The firm wanted to relocate their office to a Grade II-listed building in Salford, Riverside House, to allow the Muse team to move to an agile way of working. Riverside House was built in the 1860s, and although it was locally listed, it had stood in ruin for a number of years before it was acquired by the English Cities Fund for redevelopment.
Once the building had been repaired and construction for a new, four-storey office was completed, Muse signed a lease agreement with the fund to move into the building. Muse then decided to hire a commercial interior design company, SpaceInvader, to decorate and design the interior furnishings of their new offices. As a result, SpacerInvader approached Vantage Spaces to provide stunning biophilia for Muse’s new headquarters.

The task
Muse Developments wanted their new office to give their staff a new way of working, moving away from the traditional system of allocated desk spaces for each individual. Previously, Muse team members would clear their desk at the end of each day and store their belongings in a locker. Muse now wanted to provide employees with different places to work better suited to their tasks, whilst still encouraging improved collaboration and fostering mutual appreciation, awareness and recognition within their team.
The building’s location next to the Irwell River was also key to the design of the office interior. SpaceInvader and Muse wanted the space to reflect the views of the river and its effect on the surrounding city centre. They wanted the fit-out to reference this by keeping an underlying industrial aesthetic throughout. That’s where Vantage Spaces came in to help…
The results
Along with sustainability and waste reduction, the interior concept needed to reflect the building’s proximity to water and nature. SpaceInvader put emphasis on biophilia being key.
Vantage Spaces placed potted planters and other biophilia throughout the coworking and lounge spaces in the new offices, helping to create a relaxing and productive work environment. The plants assist in reflecting the building’s riverside location, whilst also helping to absorb excess carbon dioxide from office machinery, further helping to create a sustainable interior design!
